Ben's Canteen: The Place on the Hill
Undersell and over deliver. Ben's Canteen proves how this can just work so well. It's a no frills joint just around the corner from home that's a far cry from any canteen.
Start with a sharpener at the bar. If brunching, 'About Bloody Thyme' will put led in your pencil. Otherwise, go for the Chilli Caipiroska or, naturally, an Espresso Martini. If you're in a bad way, they'll even give you a pint of ice cold Berocca. No excuses.
The moreish menu is living the American dream; proper comfort food, done so well. Burgers are the order of the day, yes even for brunch. All come with hand cut chips, which rock, but I would always replace with the stellar sweet potato chips. Keep an eye on the specials board where there are one-off cracking dishes to try. The salads have never blown me away, but to be honest, you're not going to Ben's for salad. When it comes to the sides, I would, literally, recommend ordering one of each. Seriously, you have nothing to lose. They are immense.
Ben's is so much more than the place on the hill, but that is one of the loveliest things about it. Tip of the day: Don't take yourself too seriously. Life's just a little bit more fun that way.
