Polpo Harvey Nichols: Perfetto with a pair of Peter Pilottos

When I heard Polpo was opening in Harvey Nichols, I thought, where is this happening? Then I learned it was replacing the cheese and meat counters which none of us even remember, and I thought, how wonderful.

Of course all the Polpo favourites like moreish arancini, those meatballs and fritto misto are stars but I had forgotten that virtually anything can be made gluten free, with polenta used instead of flour. Day, made.

The offering is delightfully good value; it's a lesson to Knightsbridge on how great food and wine can be enjoyed without costing as much as a long weekend in Venice. A heap of marinated baby octopuses (fun to say, right?) makes for a pleasing aperitivo, especially for only £3, whilst a generous plate of cod cheeks and lentils is hearty and homely. You could lovingly lap up all the veggie dishes, but courgette ribbons with Parmesan and basil gets my vote.

Desserts like caffe corretto, Aperol sorbet and Tiramisu pots are beautifully boozy. Order the flourless pistachio and almond cake to share and you'll be fighting over the spoons. Oh, and there's Nutella pizza...

Hats off to the HN crew for creating 70 covers out of cheese and meat counters. Next to Kurobuta and Burger & Lobster, there's now another reason to get to the fifth floor and make a day of it.
